Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester

Piccadilly Gardens

Following an international competition, AECOM was chosen to design the new Piccadilly Gardens, the centerpiece of a wider regeneration strategy that includes 1960's Piccadilly Plaza and new commercial development. Working in collaboration with renowned architect Tadao Ando, ARUP Engineers, Chapman Robinson Architects and lighting designer Peter Fink, AECOM has created an exciting new image for what is now the largest public open space in central Manchester.
The gardens' central lawns are enclosed within bold landscape forms. The elliptical fountain plaza, at the center of the site, is the most dynamic and active element. Here, in the sunniest area, the main pedestrian routes meet and provide a direct link to the adjacent streetscape. Architect Tadao Ando’s dramatic, curved wall complements the fountain ellipse and shields the south side of the gardens from surrounding traffic.
The redesigned and refurbished Piccadilly Gardens provide a vibrant setting for the ongoing public life of Manchester’s downtown area, and a central focus for citywide celebrations.

AECOM- London Olympics 2012

2012 Olympics - Legacy Masterplan Framework, London, U.K.

Building on the success of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Masterplanning work, we are leading a consortium developing a Legacy Masterplan Framework (LMF) for the Olympic Park. We are working in collaboration with Olympic Delivery Authority, Greater London Authority, London Development Agency, Design for London, five Olympic Host Boroughs and the local community.
The 2012 Olympic Games have created a unique opportunity for the regeneration and redevelopment of an entire urban district in London. The preparation of the LMF is central to the realization of this objective. We have been commissioned to lead a multi-disciplinary team to deliver a regeneration framework for the Olympic Legacy leading to a new piece of London within the Lower Lea Valley. The task is to develop and test a framework masterplan accompanied by a series of detailed strategies in relation to social infrastructure, housing, employment, leisure & culture, town planning, transport, water, waste, strategic sustainability, infrastructure, energy and climate change.
The purpose of the preferred Legacy Framework is to establish the key principles to achieve the overarching urban regeneration ambitions for the site over a long period of time - the LMF currently envisages an “end-state” in 2040.
The LMF proposals currently being developed are unprecedented given the size of the site area, the quantum of proposed development, complexity and the expected long timescale of the development period. A paramount objective for us is to create a high quality urban environment and a development that can respond to the changing character of the Legacy site over time.

AECOM- A sustainable Company?

Sustainability

Beyond Sustainability
Sustainability demands whole-systems understanding and interdisciplinary collaboration across architecture, design + planning, economics, building engineering, and program + construction management. It also demands that client goals, project site context, and sustainability targets be examined by the whole project team at the outset of the work. Our specialized sustainability consultants lead project teams experienced in integrated planning and building processes, utilizing the most effective techniques and technologies.
Our capabilities provide for a range of sustainable outcomes. Our strategic planners help local governments develop strategies to reduce their carbon footprints. Our economists inform a higher and more even quality of life for communities. Our environmental + ecological planners conserve open space, protect biodiversity, restore habitat, support renewable energy development, and manage natural resources. Our masterplanners create inherently more sustainable communities by encouraging dense, mixed-use development correlated with mass transit, pedestrian connectivity, and open space. Our architects and building engineers deliver high-performance buildings tailored to their contexts. Our landscape architects and urban designers design low-impact landscapes. Our program + construction managers maintain and advance sustainable agendas as projects are implemented.
We have created and are using the Sustainable Systems Integration Model™ (SSIM™), which quantifies performance versus cost across a variety of sustainability indicators, addressing Water, Energy, Green-building, Economics, Transit, Society + Culture, and Site + Ecology, to determine the optimal sustainable development plan for communities and campuses.
It is in our total placemaking offer that we see the potential to do the most good. In a time of climate change, ecological degradation, resource scarcity, and socioeconomic disparity, we are positioned to create communities, environments and buildings that point in a low-carbon, environmentally responsible, socially equitable direction. Our colleagues in Water, Energy, Transportation and Environment deliver sustainable infrastructure to support these places.
Sustainability Services:
  • Climate action planning

Three Liverpool buildings have won a national award for architectural excellence, it has been announced.
The new Liverpool Pier Head and canal link project was given an award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) on Thursday.
The project links together the iconic Liver Building, the new Liverpool Museum and the recent ferry terminal.
A section of Liverpool One and Liverpool John Moores Art and Design Academy were also recognised.
A total of 102 buildings in the UK and Europe won awards.
RIBA President Ruth Reed said: "The RIBA Awards always give an opportunity for gem-like small projects and less established practices to shine through and this year is no exception.
Liverpool One
Parts of the Liverpool One development were commended
"Far from being a size prize, the RIBA Awards are for buildings that offer value to people's lives. I am looking forward to seeing an exciting RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist."
The canal link project was designed by AECOM Design + Planning.
Liverpool One phases one and seven, part of which is the arcade linking the development with Church Street, were also given an award.
Riba said the arcade, designed by Haworth Tompkins with Dixon Jones, was based on historical models but gave a "contemporary retail experience".
The Liverpool John Moores University building was chosen for its "atmosphere of creativity".
Riba said Rick Mather Architects had given the students "an enviable new environment that is both practical and inspiring".

AECOM projects- AECOM's Sutong Bridge named ASCE 2010 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement

The Sutong Bridge crosses the Yangtze River, connecting the cities of Suzhou and Nantong. With a main span of 1,088 meters, it is the world's longest cable-stayed bridge - and the first cable-stayed bridge to surpass a 1,000-meter span. Since opening to traffic during 2008, the bridge has reduced the commute between the two cities from four hours to one hour.
AECOM provided design and construction engineering services to China Communications and Construction Company, Second Navigational Engineering Bureau, for the bridge, which was one of five projects considered for the ASCE honor as part of the organization's annual Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) awards program.
"The Sutong Bridge serves as a great example of what can be achieved when a client who is committed to the sustainable advancement of infrastructure partners with a professional technical services leader like AECOM to transform a vision into reality," said AECOM President and Chief Executive Officer John M. Dionisio.
"The Sutong Bridge pushed the technological frontier of long-span bridge construction," said Dionisio. "We are honored by this recognition of a critical project that balances the need to advance a society with a commitment to environmental conservation."
This year's OPAL awards were presented on March 25 in Washington, D.C.

Sheaf Square

Providing an upbeat welcome to visitors arriving by train, and as part of the regeneration of Sheffield city center, AECOM has completed the award-winning scheme for Sheaf Square.
The contemporary-style public space incorporates exciting water features, art installations and seating areas, along with new road layouts and a public transport interchange. This new gateway also forms part of the Gold Route connecting the station to the city center.
Formerly a run-down area in front of the main railway station dominated by a busy roundabout on a steep slope, the site offered poor access for pedestrians into the city center. Its transformation included creating a new road network, demolishing an old office building, and improving pedestrian links. At the same time, redevelopment opportunities were identified for shops and other businesses to create active frontages to animate and frame the public square.
AECOM led a multidisciplinary team comprising civil, geotechnical and transportation engineers, quantity surveyors, lighting designers, and artists specializing in glass and stainless steel. In a modern interpretation of Sheffield's traditional steelworking skills, one of the key art installations is Cutting Edge, a stainless steel wall with brightly coloured glass, illuminated at night, made by local artists. The design team also featured a unique partnering arrangement with Sheffield City Council's Urban Design and Environmental Planning team. AECOM prepared designs up to detailed planning level.

HIstory os AECOM

A little more than 20 years ago, our founder, Richard G. Newman, and a handful of Ashland Inc. employees, shared a dream of creating an industry-leading firm dedicated to making the world a better place. On April 6, 1990, AECOM evolved to an independent firm formed by the merger of five Ashland entities. While our official founding was in 1990, some of our predecessor firms had distinguished histories dating back to the early 1900s.
Since then, more than 30 companies have joined AECOM, and in 2007, we became a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: ACM).
Today, listed on the Fortune 500 as one of America’s largest companies, AECOM's talented employees – including architects, engineers, designers, planners, scientists and management professionals – now serve clients in more than 100 countries around the world.
AECOM’s technical expertise and creative excellence come from the rich history of some of the world’s finest engineering, environmental, planning and design companies. From transportation, energy and water systems to enhancing environments and creating new buildings and communities, our vision remains constant – to make the world a better place.
What sets us apart is our collaborative way of working globally and delivering locally. A trusted partner to our clients, we draw together teams of engineers, planners, architects, landscape architects, environmental specialists, economists, scientists and program managers dedicated to finding the most innovative and appropriate solutions to create, enhance and sustain the world’s built, natural and social environments.
We are proud to be recognized in Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) 2010 Top 500 Design Firms' rankings, where AECOM is ranked #1 overall. AECOM also took the top spot in the following general building categories: commercial offices, government offices, education, correctional facilities, as well as hotels, motels and convention centers. Ranked first in transportation, AECOM also led the categories of airports, marine and port facilities, as well as mass transit and rail. In the category of environmental, AECOM took the top spot in sanitary and storm sewers and was ranked second in hazardous waste.
And in 2009 and 2010, Newsweek included AECOM on its list of the Greenest Big Companies in America.

This is the Bloomington Central Park Station, Bloomington Central Station is a 40-acre mixed-use transit oriented development (TOD) located on the Hiawatha Light Rail Line in the Twin Cities metro area. Situated between the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America, with direct access to downtown Minneapolis, this development will break the surrounding pattern of sprawl with a vibrant, high-density neighborhood based on a "living street" system with an active, walkable public realm.
Central Station Park is the democratic common space of the mixed-use community. The park is structured in a series of flexible, multi-purpose spaces accommodating the diverse desires of the users. The great lawn and central plaza provide spaces for events such as concerts, festivals, markets, and flexible recreation areas. The series of garden rooms that flank the lawn provide spaces for more quiet and intimate uses.
The park also employs sustainable practices including structural soil to maximize the root area of the trees in the transit corridor, an extensive infiltration basin in the great lawn and the careful selection of materials including native granite and limestone and sustainably harvested Ipe wood.
